Cotton production to go down except in India
The International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) has revised its estimate of global cotton production for the 2020-2021 growing season.
ICAC had said as recently as September that it predicted production of 25.1 million tonnes for the year, a decline of 4.2% compared to 2019-2020.
At the start of October, however, it revised its prediction down to 24.6 million tonnes. If this proves accurate, it would represent a fall of 6.1%.
It said most cotton-producing countries will see their output fall. This was with the exception of India. ICAC now expects India to produce 6.2 million tonnes, compared to 5.7 million in 2019-2020.
If, in ICAC estimates, India is predicted to be the biggest producer of cotton in 2020-2021, China is predicted to be the biggest consumer of the fibre and the US to be its biggest exporter.
