C&A to ground Mustang sally in 2023

Fashion retail group C&A has announced that its partnership with Baden-Württemberg-based jeans brand Mustang will end by February 2023.

It said the four-year partnership had been a success, but that all but 200 of its 503 stores will cease to stock Mustang jeans by August this year. By February 1 next year, the tie-up between the two companies will be over.

Chief merchandise and sustainability officer for C&A Europe, Martijn Van der Zee, said the partnership with Mustang had helped the retail group strengthen its jeans assortment “in the upper price range”. But the company said it will now focus more on its own brand “as part of a strategic realignment of business in Europe”.

In response, Mustang chief executive, Andreas Baur, said he was sorry to learn of C&A’s decision, but added that it would help the denim brand fulfil its own new strategy. “Our goal is to attract younger and more international customers to our denim brand,” Mr Baur said, “and increase our brand appeal. We will also expand our middle and upper price ranges in order to offer wholesale customers and our own retail stores the opportunity to generate higher average receipts. This is where we see strong demand in the current market.”
