Automated indigo dyeing at the core of new Tonello technology
Washing, dyeing and finishing solutions provider Tonello presented a new technology, DyeMate, at Kingpins in April.
It described the innovation as “technology that reinterprets the traditional indigo garment dyeing process”. Tonello said at the Amsterdam event that the new product would take indigo dyeing “to a new evolutionary stage, making it automatic and repeatable, efficient and sustainable”.
Tonello said: “The process of indigo garment dyeing has been entirely manual up to the present day, with results that have always been uneven and dependent on the skill of artisans.” The company insisted this had resulted in “a priceless cultural legacy”.
In developing DyeMate, it explained that it had made indigo dyeing fully automated and reproducible, with a high level of sustainability because the new system works at low temperatures and with lower volumes of chemicals.
Using the new technology in sulfur- and vat-dyeing processes are also options open to dyehouses and brands. The company will supply DyeMate as a kit that its customers can use in all Tonello washing and dyeing machines.
It paid tribute to the work of three partners in helping it produce DyeMate. It worked on the project with dye specialist Archroma, with denim mill Artistic Milliners and with Bruges-based textile innovation specialist Franky Vangaever.
