Abruzzo awaits textile jobs boost

The regional branch in Abruzzo of employers’ association Confindustria has said the positive results of textile companies there suggest the industry could increase its workforce from around 20,000 now to 30,000 within two years.

Confindustria Abruzzo has studied the recent results of 2,100 companies in the wider textile and fashion sector across the central Italian region and has concluded that their performance is almost at pre-covid levels.

But the pandemic also led to many experienced workers leaving companies and the search for new talent is intense. In recent comments to national business newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, Rita Annecchini, the director of the NAMI fashion school, which has centres in two cities in the region, said companies needed new workers because “order after order is coming in”.

Ms Annecchini said fashion is a strategic sector for Abruzzo because the jobs the sector is creating there are particularly attractive to creative, skilled, young people. “We have to train new personnel,” she said, “and bring them into this industry, which is fascinating and profitable.”

One of the companies that Il Sole 24 Ore highlighted among the examples of far-sighted and innovative textile companies in Abruzzo was denim laundry Codis. It said the company’s facility near the coastal town of Pineto uses natural dyes and new technology to produce 10,000 pairs of jeans per day.
