Ethical Denim Council reviews first case
The Ethical Denim Council (EDC) says it has concluded its first hearing on a case opposing a denim mill and a fabric buyer, who are unnamed. An offshoot of a Transformer’s Foundation report, the US-based non-profit was created to promote ethical purchasing practices and assist denim industry suppliers facing unfair conditions set by brands and retailers.

The denim manufacturer who brought the case to the attention of the council says that the buyer made a series of demands that ultimately led to the cancellation of an order for 100,000 metres of fabric left unclaimed.

The council’s panel of experts unanimously found the buyer guilty of breaching several of the Eight Ethical Principles that the EDC defends as the base for business transactions in the industry. The experts specifically rejected the buyer’s claim that market changes justified the renegotiations.

A complete report on the verdict will be released in June.
