Fans snap up ‘world’s heaviest denim’

Never one to shy away from superlatives, Naked & Famous’ latest release sold out quickly, as denim fans scrambled to get their hands on the heaviest denim in the world.

The Canadian brand’s 32oz per square yard denim had already been described as “possibly the world’s heaviest denim”- so when founder Brandon Svarc asked its Japanese mill to up the ante with a 40oz fabric, it was a challenge it could not pass up. However, the mill had to modify the looms and shuttles, at first finding the thickness too difficult to weave.

The fabric is roughly four times the weight of conventional denim. Sewing the jeans required two sewing operators and multiple days to make one pair, using specially brought in saddlemaking machinery.

The jeans feature a double thick 30oz cowhide leather patch, hand-stitched using elk sinew, long copper rivets, custom long top buttons, extra heavy duty zips and red selvedge ID.

After teasing the jeans at the start of the year, the brand released the first pairs at the end of March – and they were sold out “within minutes”, according to fans.

Addressing why he wanted to make 40oz jeans, Mr Svarc said: “If we didn’t make it, it wouldn’t exist. So, it’s my destiny to make them. When people ask me in the future ‘what’s the best thing you’ve made?’ The 40oz jeans are my favourite.”
