Water use report aims to counter ‘vague sustainability claims’

23/07/2025

Non-profit body Transformers Foundation has worked with Pakistan mill Naveena Denim to compile a report on water consumption during indigo dyeing.

In response to what the partners called “vague sustainability claims” and the need for “credible environmental data” in the denim industry, the report aims to establish baseline and best-in-class metrics for water use.

They said the study uses real-world data collected from rope and slasher dyeing systems at mills in Pakistan, Turkey, Italy and China.

Conclusions include a reassurance that, with the right practices in place, water usage can be substantially reduced.

Transformers Foundation made the full report available at this link on July 23.
