Cotton: southern hemisphere update

06/02/2026

Cotton industry information resource Cotlook said in its most recently monthly report that Austrlia’s crop in the current season is likely to be around 1 million tonnes. It pointed out that this would a “significantly lower” total than Australia produced in the last campaign.

Cotlook said the explanation was simple: farmers have sown cotton on a reduced area of land, and water availability is lower.

Elsewhere in the southern hemisphere, Cotlook said planting accelerated in Brazil in the course of January, reaching a completion level of more than 60%. But it warned that wet weather in Mato Grosso had left cotton farmers in that state concerned about pest infestation.
