Dope-dyeing fibres can deliver huge emissions savings, Lenzing claims

The dope-dyeing of fibres to allow mills to use Tencel to create fabrics with the appearance of denim is making it possible for downstream customers to achieve emissions savings of up to 90%, Lenzing has claimed.

At Intertextile Shanghai in March, Lenzing showed denim products constructed with Tencel in blends with cotton, elastane and other fibres, but it also had on display lightweight jeans that were 100% Tencel.

The company’s Sandy Liu told Inside Denim that dope-dyeing the fibres meant mills were able to produce these fabrics without carrying out their own dyeing operations, with savings in water, energy, dyestuffs and other chemicals.

“A reduction of 90% in their emissions is possible because they do no longer need to dye,” she said.
