G-Star Raw closing operations in Australia

Dutch denim retailer G-Star Raw will be closing its Australian operations, which includes 57 stores in the country. G-Star Australia went into administration in May, having suffered from covid-related closures in a sector already struggling to recover from bushfires that raged earlier in the year.

The local operation had hoped to find a buyer, but administrators Ernst & Young have announced they were unable to find anyone suitable.

“G-Star Raw is a globally recognised brand,” said Ernst & Young in a statement. “The fact that no party was able buy the business reflects the high level of uncertainty regarding the future prospects for the retail sector in Australia.”

The closures will result in the loss of some 200 jobs.
