Clothes can become like library books, IED lecturer says

An influential member of the Barcelona Sustainable Fashion Association and lecturer at the IED design school, Gabriela Pedranti, has lent her voice to those calling for a future in which consumers will rent rather than own garments, including jeans.

Questioned by newspaper El País about microfibre pollution in the oceans of the world, Ms Pedranti said brands such as Barcelona-based Back to Eco were proving that sustainable denim apparel is possible.

This brand combines recycled and organic fibres, uses a minimum amount of chemicals and says it avoids “at all cost” polyester and any other petroleum-derived material.

In addition, Ms Pedranti said clothes could become like books we borrow from a library. In future, she said, it will become common for consumers to hire high-quality, well designed, sustainable clothes.
