Renewcell seeks bigger home as demand for recycled material grows

Swedish company Renewcell, a recycler of textile waste, has seen demand for its raw material rocket and is looking to rehouse production into a plant that will manage around 70,000 tons of discarded textile a year.

Renewcell currently runs production at its first plant in Kristinehamn and is now considering investing around 1 billion SEK (£90 million) to build a plant in Ortviken. The industrial area houses one of the world’s largest paper mills, SCA Ortviken.

Patrik Lundström, CEO of Renewcell, said: “We have to scale up our production rapidly to meet demand for our product from the fashion industry. We have not yet made a decision on where the plant will be located and the consultation we are now initiating is the first step of an in-depth evaluation.

“Since part of our process is based on traditional paper and pulp technology, much of what we need is already in place at Ortviken - good infrastructure, logistics solutions and a stable landlord. There are also very experienced personnel available in the region.”

He added that the factory, which would employ around 100 and would have room for expansion, could be up and running in the first half of 2022.
