CmiA cotton no longer 'Better Cotton' by 2023

Better Cotton, headquartered in Geneva and London, campaigns for increased production and consumption of more sustainable or “better cotton” worldwide.
The two parties said that the discontinuation of this arm of their collaboration was due to the growth of both organisations since 2012 and that their “new form of cooperation” would create space for greater flexibility and innovation and result in joint projects for smallholder farmers in Africa.
It is likely, they continued, that this new way of working will be oriented towards common interests such as soil fertility, child labour, biodiversity, women’s empowerment and climate change adaptation and mitigation in the region. Together, they will seek funding from public and private donors alike.
Chief operating officer at Better Cotton, Lena Staafgard, stated that the time was now to “reimagine how [the two organisations] can use our individual strengths to create even more impact together”. She added that together, both bodies have supported more than one million small holder farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa over the past decade.
Expanding on this, managing director of Aid by Trade Foundation, Tina Stridde, said: “The partnership was a joint effort that brought greater sustainability to the cotton and textile industry while helping to protect nature and create economic and social benefits for smallholder farmers and ginnery workers.
“We appreciate the open exchange of views, ideas and issues of special interest with Better Cotton; it is obvious that both organisations have common goals. We are looking forward to continuing to pursue our endeavours for sustainable cotton production in a new form.”
