New digital tool to ‘close the loop’

A group of organisations dedicated to developing a circular economy for apparel have joined forces to create an online and open access platform. It will allow companies to track and trade deadstock, unused textile and apparel industry waste, or post-consumer goods.

This platform builds up on a network set up by Reverse Resources, an organisation based in Bangladesh and Estonia, that maps out unused resources in the textile and apparel supply chain to unlock new recycling opportunities.

“Our mission is to help to bring down the cost of recycling to support the scale-up of the circular economy. The more industry members that participate, the more we can create economies of scale,” said Ann Runnel, Founder & CEO of Reverse Resources.

The new industry organisations to join the programme include Accelerating Circularity, Fashion for Good, Global Fashion Agenda’s Circular Fashion Partnership, US-based Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles (SMART), and the UK-based Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP).

The open access platform will help circular economy players find services they require. It has already been tested for post-industrial textile waste industry and deadstock. A pilot has been in operation with Global Fashion Agenda’s Circular Fashion Partnership in Bangladesh, Fashion for Good’s Sorting for Circularity India Project, and Accelerating Circularity’s Project Europe.

“Linking recyclers with manufacturer’s information increases the transparency of post-industrial material availability, thus leading to greater circularity,” the company said in a statement.

An estimated 17 million tonnes in the USA and 5 million tonnes in Europe of post-consumer waste are said to be landfilled or incinerated every year.
