Surge in solar supply at Artistic Milliners

A tie-up between Karachi-based denim manufacturer Artistic Milliners (AM) and local renewable energy producer Reon is to result in an 8.5-megawatt (MW) captive solar power initiative that will take AM’s total solar energy reliance to 11.2 MW across its mills and factories in the Korangi, Landhi and Port Qasim areas of the Pakistani city.

This latest photovoltaic expansion is projected to supply AM with a further 13.5 gigawatt-hours of solar energy annually, the company said.

In turn, it expects to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 8,279 tons per year.

"We are making swift progress towards producing clean energy that creates a positive ripple effect for surrounding communities," commented managing director, Murtaza Ahmed. "This milestone is a critical step that will provide environment-friendly energy and stable returns to the economy for decades to come."

Chief executive, Omer Ahmed, described mill- and factory-level decarbonisation as a "crucial pillar" of AM's sustainability strategy.

A member of the Net Zero Pakistan coalition, which launched last August, the manufacturer is publicly committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. AM hosted an interactive climate action simulation workshop for fellow signatories this past April.
