Bangladesh hopes for more Chinese investment after July state visit

A formal visit to China by Bangladesh’s prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, concluded on July 11. She met senior figures in the Chinese government, including President Xi Jinping, during the two-day visit.

A total of 21 new agreements resulted from the meetings and the two countries formally announced seven new projects through which they will seek to strengthen strategic ties.

The prime minister said she wanted to encourage Chinese investors to support projects in Bangladesh. She added that the government there is keen to increase exports of products to China.

Reports say the textile and garment sector is likely to be a prominent part of this. Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry, combined with China’s infrastructure development and manufacturing expertise, represent what commentators have referred to as “ample opportunities for collaboration and synergistic growth”.

China has been Bangladesh’s largest trading partner for more than a decade.
