Sea-washed denim offers unique fades
US brand Lunasalt Denim, which washes its deadstock selvedge denim jeans and jackets in the ocean to produce unique fades, has introduced a new style, Biofouling Seawash, which has spent two months in oyster cages off the coast of New England.

The company was launched in 2009 by oyster farmers, denim fans who were searching for a way to speed up the fading process on selvedge.

They realised the seawater softens the fabric but also sets the indigo into the cotton, with the waves, UV rays and ocean life contributing to a distinctive fade.

They add the jeans to the oyster nets, then let the sea do its work.

The company said: “As oyster farmers, we continuously take notice of the forecast, changing tides and temperatures. The water temperature plays a huge roll in what takes place below the surface. This includes everything from algae blooms to spawning to jingle shells and barnacles.”

Each collection works within the lunar calendar: the Quarter Moon collection spends eight days in sea, the Half Moon 14-16 days, the Whole Moon 28 days, and Double Moon, 56 days.

Summer months mean lighter, brighter washes as the water is teaming with life and the water is warmer. During autumn, the denim washes are darker and bolder.

The jeans are laid flat to dry, after a week they are washed and brushed by hand, and left to dry again.

The process leaves no trace of discharge into the water, according to the company.
