Textile sorting facility projected in Galicia
The regional government of Galicia, Spain, has announced plans to build a public textile waste sorting plant, and that it will allocate €25 million to its construction and management. The site earmarked for the new plant is in the Sogama Environmental Complex, in Cerceda, some 20 km south from A Coruña and Inditex’s headquarters. The factory is expected to begin operating in mid 2026 at a capacity of 3,000 tonnes per year. This could be brought up to 24,000 tonnes/year, declared Alfonso Rueda, president of the Xunta de Galicia, in a press release.

The prime focus of the site will be to direct used or waste clothing and textiles to recycling solutions, including incineration. The goods will be sorted by colour and composition.

The plant is expected to benefit from recent EU directives, including the mandatory collection of household textiles starting in 2025, bans on the destruction of unsold goods, and financial incentives to increase recycled content in new items.

The regional government also seeks to use this project to attract other companies in textiles, innovation and recycling to this future green industrial hub in Galicia.
