Bershka’s denims made to be disassembled
As part of its sustainability platform ‘Join Life’, Inditex-owned fashion brand Bershka has created a series of denim items using a heat-dissolvable sewing yarn and disassembly process developed by Belgian start-up Resortecs.

Cédric Vanhoeck, Resortecs cofounder and executive lead, commented: “With Smart Stitch, big companies now have a thread that gives them the same performance and the same flexibility in design and creativity as a regular stitching thread. And with Smart Disassembly, we provide big fashion players the technology, or the first technology, that allows them to process large volumes of garments for recycling.”

The Brussels-based company received a 2.5 million euro grant from the European Innovation Council (EIC) Accelerator this past June. The yarn and disassembly process it has developed have already been tested by US-based made-to-measure jeans brand Unspun and by H&M for a ‘Circular Design Story’ capsule collection. The partnership with Spanish fashion group Inditex will be followed, at the end of this year, by the launch of a Smart-Stitched ski jacket by French sports retailer Decathlon.

Items in the Bershka range include wide-leg cargo pants for men and for women. The retailer also abides by the Jeans Redesign programme for a part of its range and offers denim styles having neither rivets nor jacron to facilitate recycling.
