Wind farms start Vicunha clean-energy project in north-east Brazil

Brazil-based denim manufacturer Vicunha has launched a renewable energy project in north-east Brazil.
The programme has begun with Vicunha-owned wind-farms in the state of Piauí, part of a partnership with energy company Enel Group.
In the next phase, wind-generated electricity from these farms will power Vicunha manufacturing facilities in the north-east region. The factories, in Maracanaú and Pacajus in Ceará, and in Natal in Rio Grande do Norte, will start using this renewable energy in the second half of this year.
Operations director, Marcel Imaizumi, said Vicunha was “constantly seeking ways to contribute to a more sustainable fashion industry”. Last year, the company began to use reclaimed water in its denim production. Mr Imaizumi said adding clean energy to this demonstrated a commitment to sustainability that would impact the entire supply chain.
