New phase for Spinnova

10/06/2025
Finnish company Spinnova has announced that it had finalised the strategic review of Woodspin, a demo plant created in partnership with Brazilian group Suzano. The future of this facility was up in the air following Suzano’s decision to pull out of the joint venture. Today, Spinnova has announced that it will acquire Suzano Finland, which owns 50% of Woodspin shares, for one euro. Suzano Finland provided the refining equipment for microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) technology.

The decision to stop operations will lead to 27 employees, out of a total of 33, to be temporarily laid off.

But Spinnova CEO, and founder, Janne Poranen said that research will continue to improve process efficiency and reduce costs. He intends to set up a consortium of companies to advance the scaling of the company’s innovative natural fibre.

“We have received confirmation from textile value chain operators that the properties of Spinnova’s fibre are already sufficient for selected commercial applications. However, fibre production costs are currently too high. For this reason, we will focus on reducing production and investment costs,” he said, adding that the company is currently looking for partners to join the consortium.
