Canopy releases 2022 audit results
Canopy, a Canadian non-profit that seeks to protect ancient and endangered forests, has released the findings of the 2022 audits of the manmade cellulosic fibre producers that are part of the CanopyStyle initiative.

A total of seven producers, three of which are new, have accepted to open their operations to third party auditors Preferred by Nature (formerly known as NEPCon) and SCS Global Services. Enka and Kelheim, in Germany, and China-based Jilin and Xinxiang (Bailu viscose) are the four ongoing members. Kara Fiber, PT Rayon Utama Makmur (or RUM Indonesia) and Cosmo (a pulp supplier), are the three newcomers to the programme.

The audits focus on wood sourcing and the 2022 round found that Jilin, Xinxiang, Kara Fiber, ENKA, Kelheim Fibres and Cosmo were at “low risk of sourcing from Ancient and Endangered Forests” or other controversial sources. The report notes that RUM Indonesia, a newcomer to CanopyStyle, has increased the proportion of FSC certified fibre.

Based in Gaziantep, in the south of Turkey, Kara Fiber began a new lyocell production facility last October and is said to be still in testing phase. It is part of textile and fibre group Kara Holding.

Dissolving pulp manufacturer Cosmo Specialty Fibers is headquartered in Cosmopolis, Washington and is part of The Gores Group which intends to restart the former Weyerhaeuser Specialty Cellulose Mill.
