Envoy plans expansion

Denim fabric manufacturer Envoy Textiles, based in Dhaka, has been granted a €10.8 million loan by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). These funds will be used to purchase and install a new, more energy-efficient spinning unit at the company’s plant in Jamirdia, Bangladesh. It will add an annual production capacity of 3,600 tonnes of yarn to the company’s denim fabric making. Construction and operation of the new spinning unit is expected to create 250 new jobs.

Envoy’s annual denim fabric production capacity is around 52 million metres, which is said to be close to 10% of the country’s total production capacity. It operates the first denim manufacturing plant to have achieved platinum level Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

Kutubuddin Ahmed, chairman of Envoy Textiles Limited, told local press that the company's parent organisation Sheltech Group was planning to expand into denim garment and knit making with two new factories that could begin production towards the end of 2023.

Ashok Lavasa, a vice-president at ADB commented: “The ready-made garment industry is a key driver of Bangladesh’s economy, accounting for over 80% of the country’s total export earnings, and Envoy is the leading denim fabric manufacturer. Modern spinning equipment will increase yarn production capacity, reduce reliance on imported yarn and enhance the industry’s efficiency, sustainability and energy efficiency. This project marks ADB’s return to financing Bangladesh’s textile sector.”
