AAFA welcomes extension of China tariff exemption
The American Apparel & Footwear Association (AAFA) has welcomed an announcement from the Biden administration that it will extend exclusions for many of the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on imports from China.
In March, the administration announced that 352 product types were exempt from paying the China Section 301 tariffs until the end of 2022. The new announcement extends that for a further nine months.
“Tariff costs have been a primary concern for the apparel and footwear industry for years now,” said AAFA chief executive, Steve Lamar. “Despite accounting for only 6% of all product imports, the industry pays 25% of all tariffs collected by the US government and [these] amount to a huge hidden tax on families for the clothes and shoes they must buy.”
