The deal will build on the two companies’ existing joint development agreement, first signed in 2019, which saw them work together to research enzymatic solutions to plastic pollution from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polylactic acid.
Under the new terms, Novozymes has pledged to supply Carbios with large-scale volumes of the latter's proprietary PET-degrading enzymes ahead of construction of its biological PET-recycling facility in Longlaville, France, later this year. It will also supply these enzymes to all licensees of the technology. Carbios expects production to commence at the plant, which it says will be the first of its kind anywhere in the world, in 2025. The site will have capacity to process 50,000 tonnes of waste annually.
“Novozymes’ continued support is testament to our joint commitment to achieve a truly circular economy for plastics and textiles,” commented Carbios chief executive, Emmanuel Ladent. “We are delighted to build on our strong existing relationship to provide a sustainable supply solution for our future customers.”
The biorecycling start-up recently inaugurated its new headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand. President of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Laurent Wauquiez, was in attendance to officially mark the opening.
As outlined in its first-ever sustainability report, published last month, Carbios has now formalised its target to depolymerise approximately 55 tonnes (60 tons) of PET at its demonstration plant in the city this year.
