New cellulose-recycling trials launched in Europe
After having launched trials in polyester in Europe, Accelerating Circularity (AC) has now set up a consortium to test the possibilities of recycling cellulose-based textiles. Four possible value chains have been identified so far, the non-profit organisation says.

This trial run will thus be focusing on transforming post-consumer waste into single jersey or Italian fleece knit fabrics and shirting-weight or twill woven fabrics. They are expected to have a minimum recycled content of 40%, half of which is to come from post-consumer spent textiles. The programme’s goal is to process at least 50 tonnes of post-consumer feedstock and ideally be able to market these fabrics to brands in the coming months.

Some 26 companies, across many European countries, are involved in the programme.

TexCycle head of sustainability Sirma Zheleva commented: “Partnering with Accelerating Circularity has given us the opportunity to learn and develop our sorting processes to enhance the quality of feedstock for textile-to-textile recycling.” TexCycle is a used textile collector, sorter and processer based in Bulgaria.

AC’s trials will also be supported by the data collecting and sharing capabilities of JUBEL.AI, a cloud-based supply chain management platform.
