Factory fire warnings coincide with Rana Plaza anniversary
26/04/2023
The Rana Plaza disaster was the result of structural failure in garment factory buildings. A decade on, industry organisations have said extreme temperatures and even fire are now major concern.
An April heatwave led to fires breaking out in two busy markets in the capital, Dhaka. Reports said thousands of shops had been destroyed.
As the anniversary of Rana Plaza, April 24, approached, the general secretary of the Bangladesh Garment and Industrial Workers Federation, Babul Akhter, told local media that high temperatures inside factories were a concern because of their potential effect on workers’ health.
In parallel, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association asked its member companies to take extra precautions against fires breaking out in industrial premises.
It said managers should make sure machinery is powered down at night and that lights, fans and boilers are switched off to lower the risk of fire.
