Bangladesh must ‘double’ denim exports by 2030 to achieve goal

Bangladesh needs to double its denim exports if it is to achieve $100 billion in apparel exports by 2030, former Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) president Siddiqur Rahman told delegates during the opening ceremony of the fifteenth Bangladesh Denim Expo, which took place in Dhaka between November 8 and 9.
The target was set by BGMEA earlier this year.
Mr Rahman said: “Denim and denim-related products account for about one fourth of Bangladesh’s total apparel exports. So, to [reach] $100 billion, the country has to double its denim exports by 2030.
“We believe brands and retailers will choose Bangladesh as their preferred apparel sourcing destination, since the country has made exemplary progresses in workplace safety and sustainability in recent years.”
Minister of commerce, Tipu Munshi, added: “Bangladesh is the second-largest apparel exporting country in the world. In denim, we are the largest exporter to both the EU and USA, even before China."
Speaking as chief guest, the minister went on to praise the Dhaka exhibition for its “huge contribution” to Bangladesh’s existing “success” in the realm of denim exports.
Meanwhile, BGMEA’s current president, Faruque Hassan, underscored how “at least eight” of the world’s top ten most “green” factories are located in the south-east Asian nation.
Around 5,000 visitors registered to attend the event, where they met with 80 suppliers from 12 countries.
