Most were targeted at consumers, ECHA explained, with 18% falling foul of EU law. Lead and phthalates were among the hazardous chemicals detected to be present in “excessive levels” by ECHA Forum members.
Around 15% of clothing, footwear, handbags, jewellery and other accessories were deemed non-compliant, it went on to say. This was due to the amount of phthalates, cadmium and lead used in their manufacture.
Non-compliance was greater among products originating from outside the European Economic Area or whose origin was unknown, ECHA added.
