OCA doubles down on in conversion cotton

The Organic Cotton Accelerator (OCA), an organisation based in Amsterdam, has teamed up with Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for its autumn awareness raising campaign. OCA intends to focus on the need to support growers as they transition from conventional to organic farming. The campaign, #BehindTheSeams, which runs this month, will attempt to explain why it is important to help farmers weather the interim period and what OCA is doing to support them.

The period of in-conversion cotton, when farmers shift practices to meet organic certification requirements, can take up to three years. It is a time when growers face fluctuating crop conditions and market uncertainties.

OCA said it provides resources such as premium payments and market linkages. During the 2023-2024 cotton season, it said it had worked with 35,000 in-conversion farmers in India and Pakistan, thanks to commitments from 16 brands participating in the OCA Farm Programme. By joining this programme, “companies can make a tangible impact on the future of organic cotton, securing not only a sustainable supply of organic fibres but also contributing to global sustainability goals,” the organisation said.
