New online impact calculator

28/10/2024
Members of SCIRT, a European Union-funded research programme, have built an online platform to offer apparel industry professionals a fast-track method to assess a product’s environmental impacts. The targeted audience for The True Cost Calculator includes designers, buyers, CSR managers, consultants and even fashion industry students.

Officially launched last week, the self-assessment tool was developed by Flemish research institute VITO and non-profit Flanders District of Creativity and draws on existing life cycle assessment (LCA) databases. But unlike other similar tools, it said it takes into account the entire lifecycle of a garment, from production and transport to use and disposal. Ecobalyse, an open-source platform developed by French governmental agencies (including ADEME), does integrate the notion of end of life.

The online calculator also incorporates insights from the SCIRT project such as new data on blends, trims and additives. Members of the SCIRT project include brands and retailers (Bel&Bo, HNST, Decathlon, Xandres and Petit Bateau), mills and industry suppliers (Altex, AVS Spinning, part of spinner ESG and Valvan), research organisations (VITO, CETI and Prospex), universities (BOKU, TU Wien, ESTIA), non-profits (Flanders DC, IID-SII) and software and data specialists (Circular.fashion and FFact).
