Unifi ups textile-to-textile recycling
US-based polyester producer Unifi has updated its environmental commitments in a “Sustainability Snapshot 2024” report released earlier this week. In it, the company continues to push circular and sustainable manufacturing.

This can be seen in he recent launch of Repreve Takeback, a system Unifi has set up with its main customers to retrieve unused materials and products at the end of their useful life, and of a thermal insulation made from textile waste called ThermaLoop.

Over the course of 2024, Unifi recycled 42 billion plastic PET bottles, and is now very close to reaching its 50 million goal by the end of 2025. Textile and yarn waste recycled across last year were the equivalent of 950 million T-shirts (based on an average weight that the company does not specify).

Recycled Repreve yarns accounted for 32% of the group’s revenues for FY2024.

The company also mentioned that it has invested in two new third-party, peer reviewed, life cycle assessments (LCAs) for its Repreve Takeback staple yarns and ThermaLoop insulation.

"Our fifth annual Sustainability Snapshot demonstrates both our progress and our drive. We continually push boundaries in recycling, waste reduction and innovation to make sustainable manufacturing available at scale,” commented Unifi CEO Eddie Ingle.
