AGI Denim’s Ceramic Blue maximises ‘chip off’

With Ceramic Blue, AGI Denim believes it has found a more sustainable solution to achieve the coveted highs and lows that equate with authenticity in the world of jeans.

“Ceramic Blue maximises the contrasts between the very white abraded areas and the rich indigo that remains in the lows,” Henry Wong, AGI Denim’s head of product development and marketing, told Inside Denim. The variations of colour on puckered seams were particularly striking. These faded areas, he pointed out, are known as the chip off and this is what inspired the name of the concept, Ceramic Blue.

A new dyeing process developed by the Pakistan-based mill, Chip-off Technology enhances contrasts by keeping the white core of the warp yarns as white as possible and the outer layer as dark as possible. This new dyeing technology in effect maximises a ring-dyeing effect, Mr Wong said.

The technology is expected to have a lower environmental profile, but tests are still underway. Mr Wong expects that vintage looks can be achieved with shorter wash cycles and lower EIM scores.
