AGI Denim expands TomorrowLab
Launched two years ago for the company’s 30th anniversary to highlight a series of explorations into future-forward denims and processes, at the time with Jonathan Cheung, AGI Denim is now making the TomorrowLab its innovation platform.

At Kingpins next week, the Karachi-based mill will present a new selection of technologies that the mill is exploring as “possible futures for denim”.

The innovation platform focuses on four key areas: dyeing (Future Colours), new properties (Future Functions), new fibres (Future Fibres) and circular economy thinking (Unwasted).

Algae Black pigment by Living Ink is among the inductees to this new edition of the TomorrowLab. AGI Denim chose this solution for its “impressive 200% reduction in carbon footprint through its Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)-backed, carbon-negative process”, and as a drop-in replacement for petrochemical dyes. Earth Glaze, the first coating to be a part of Archroma EarthColors, made from agro-industry waste, is also featured and The Chip-Off which speeds up washing and lasering effects.

In the functional denim category, AGI is presenting jeans made from Lycra FitSense, which provide extra support in targeted zones, Umorfil’s Beauty Fibre, which has skin-friendly properties, and with Outlast, an advanced thermo-regulating material.

The new fibres AGI is exploring are natural or biobased: silk, banana and bamboo.

In the “Unwasted” category, the mill is featuring denims made from Earth Protex’s Tex2Tex yarns that are made from textile waste and Re-Visco, a manmade cellulosic fibre which trades the usual virgin wood for used textiles.

The response to the first TOMORROWLAB “was overwhelming”, said Henry Wong, head of product development and marketing for AGI Denim. Now, as an innovation platform it “allows us to continuously experiment with eco-forward materials and processes – from carbon-negative dyes to future fibres – and turn them into beautiful, market-ready denim fabrics”.
