UK retailer joins US Cotton Trust Protocol

The US Cotton Trust Protocol (Trust Protocol) has welcomed UK retailer Tesco as a new member.

Tesco, home to the F&F clothing brand (in partnership with fellow UK retailer Next), has committed to sourcing 100% sustainable cotton by 2025. A press release said that it also seeks to provide transparency throughout its clothing supply chain.

Trust Protocol president, Dr Gary Adams, commented: “Tesco is committed to playing a leading role in sustainable solutions for consumers across the world and we are proud to be supporting them in this ambition.

“With each member that joins [the Trust Protocol], we have greater resources to help provide tools and knowledge to not only help US growers improve their sustainability practices, but to also give more brands and retailers the supply chain confidence they need.”

Head of technical and sustainability at Tesco, Joe Little, who is also one of the Trust Protocol’s governing directors, added: “We want to offer our customers great quality, affordable fashion, while at the same time reducing our environmental impact.

“Our customers trust that we source and produce all of our products in a responsible and ethical way and becoming a member of the US Cotton Trust Protocol gives us access to more sustainably grown cotton.”

Membership gives fashion brands and retailers access to a credit system which validates consumption of cotton and contributes towards aggregating year-on-year data in six “core” sustainability areas: land use, soil carbon, water management, soil loss, greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency.

Existing members of the Trust Protocol, which is a member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition and enrolled more than 300 members in its first six months, include Next, Gildan, Gap, Cone Denim and Advance Denim
