In a talk especially geared towards students and consumers, Ms Roberton discussed both pre-consumer and post-consumer waste, plus mechanical and chemical (which she particularly praised) recycling methods.
During a discussion with designer Mohsin Sajid at the end of her presentation, she touched upon the latest developments in recycled denim, including 80-100% recycled denim blends.
Ms Roberton said that these blends tend to mainly contain pre-consumer waste with a touch of post-consumer ingredients. The former’s longer, more uniform fibres give the denim greater strength than if it were totally made from post-consumer waste, she added, recommending less “aggressive” wash processes such as ozone and laser for this kind of denim.
A truly “beautiful” and “amazing” denim blend today would include hemp, organic cotton, recycled cotton and lyocell, the denim consultant told Mr Sajid. They both agreed that denim is at the beginning of a journey towards circularity.
Ms Roberton’s client list includes “consciously kind” denim brand Seventy + Mochi, Urban Outfitters Europe, Next, Zalando, Donna Ida, Victoria Beckham and Superfine.
