Ravensbourne x Hiut winners announced in London
The winners of the 2025 Ravensbourne University denim competition have been announced, following a day-long judging session in a dedicated exhibition space in the heart of Spitalfields in London.
The 10-week Ravensbourne x Hiut: Denim Innovation Programme, now in its tenth year, aims to educate students on all aspects of denim design and production, with a strong focus on innovation, sustainability and circularity.
Thirteen teams with members from three fashion-focused courses were tasked with creating a brand and product inspired by Welsh jeansmaker Hiut Denim Co, using fabric from sponsors ISKO, Bossa and Candiani and trims from YKK. Industry experts hosted workshops as part of the learning, with Simon Giuliani, Candiani’s sustainability director, leading a session via Zoom.
The overall winners were announced as Harbour, which was praised for its clean branding and execution, with commendations awarded to other teams for sustainability, marketing, branding, concept and technical design.
The judging panel - made up of Hiut co-founder Clare Hieatt, Hiut head of product Sara Ladd, denim consultant and tutor Sue Barrett, ISKO global marketing and PR manager Keith O'Brien, and branding specialist Matt Duckett – commented how impressed they were with the pattern cutting, craftsmanship and content creation, and the students’ understanding of target customers.
Mandi Marks-Adler, Ravensbourne course leader for fashion buying and brand management, told Inside Denim: “The project is designed to simulate the development of a collection that mirrors the same process of concept, design, marketing and promotion as the fashion industry.”
The students’ work was exhibited in the space the day before and after the competition, giving a chance for schools, families and the public to view the presentations and final results.
