BCI targets 2030 improvements

Geneva-based Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), which campaigns for increased production and consumption of more sustainable or “better cotton”, has launched a new strategy, setting a target of reducing by 50% the greenhouse gas emissions of better cotton by 2030.

BCI said it will release details of four further targets in the course of 2022. The other targets will address pesticide use, women’s empowerment, soil health and the livelihoods of people in small rural communities.

All five targets make up a new 2030 strategy that BCI has developed. It said a focus on these five themes will ensure greater lasting economic, environmental and social benefits at farm level for cotton growing communities.

“We want to see real, measurable change on the ground in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals,” said BCI chief executive Alan McClay. “We encourage continuous improvement at farm level, wherever cotton farmers are on their sustainability journey.”
