Dispersing agent promise from Garmon

Denim-focused chemicals manufacturer Garmon has introduced a new highly concentrated dispersing agent for denim applications, calling the product Fortres Gems.

The dispersing agent comes in solid form and will, according to Garmon, offer denim manufacturers a high level of performance, a 100% concentration of active ingredients to optimise cost, and Bluesign and ZDHC certification.

“Anti-backstaining agents are one of the most used products in the denim washing industry,” Garmon said. “Since they are considered a commodity, there’s a common misconception that all dispersing agents are the same.”

Its argument is that the stronger a stone-washing treatment, the higher the amount of indigo that will bleed. To have more abrasion on a denim garment, you must disperse a higher quantity of indigo in the water. However, Garmon has said, if you perform the treatment with a poor dispersing agent, the indigo will re-deposit on the fabric, resulting in a bluer garment. At this point, cleaning with ozone-based treatments is usually necessary, increasing treatment times and costs.

Poor performance from a dispersing agent may decrease stone-washing performance, reducing the overall productivity of a denim laundry. Investing in a better anti-backstaining agent can reduce the overall costs of stone-washing treatments, increasing efficiency, Garmon concluded.
