Straight takes over from skinny for women in the USA
After a long and nearly unrivalled rule, skinny jeans are becoming less popular says market tracking firm NPD Group. Its data shows that straight cut jeans now surpass skinny as the best-selling style for women in the United States in 2021.

Straight-leg jeans became the best-selling fit, representing one-third, or $3.3 billion, of women’s jeans market revenue in 2021, said NPD Group. Its research indicates that the women’s jeans segment grew 9% in 2021, compared to 2019.

Straight fit, flare and boot cut are the styles that grew the most in 2021, versus pre-pandemic 2019, all feature wider-leg styles.

With the comfort apparel trends accelerated by the pandemic, women shifted to jeans styles with looser fits, said Maria Rugolo, NPD’s apparel industry analyst. She also noted that consumers of all ages and generations are more open to variety and looking “to branch out beyond the styles that had been sitting in their closets for over a year.”

Skinny jeans remained the best-selling style among Millennials and Generation Z, says NPD. It was nonetheless the only style to experience sales decline in 2021 (v 2019).
