Italian luxury fashion label Blumarine, creatively helmed by Calabrian designer Nicola Brognano since 2019, recently released a heavily Y2K-accented collection featuring Sanrio character Hello Kitty.

The 12-piece capsule, in varying shades of sugary pink hues, is typical of Mr Brognano’s style and highly reminiscent of his past collections for the Carpi-headquartered brand, but perhaps tinged with even more girlishness than usual.

Born in 1990, the designer's early years in southern Italy were dominated by the high-octane, oft-bedazzled glamour made especially famous by Paris Hilton, Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan during their early aughts phase. On this, he told British style publication Dazed earlier this year: “I was obsessed with them when I was younger. Even growing up and thinking about becoming a fashion designer, I have always wanted to make women feel as sexy and powerful as they were.”

Fittingly, the limited-edition, all-pink-everything collection encompasses an ultra-mini denim skirt, low-slung flared jeans and a faux fur-trimmed denim jacket, plus knits, sequinned tops and a belt, diamanté-encrusted choker and two mini handbags (one furry and one sequinned). The single-colour denim articles feature lightly distressed, embroidered patches.

Mr Brognano explained to members of the fashion press earlier this month: “Hello Kitty is an icon of my generation and fully represents the 2000s aesthetic to which I have been referring since the beginning of my path at Blumarine.”
