Skinny styles take second place
The men’s market for skinny jeans styles is slowing down at a faster pace than for women, says retail intelligence firm Edited in its latest report on denim trends in the United States. It found that the proportion of skinny jeans arrivals for men dropped from 48% to 25% in the first six months of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. This, the company says, is the result of a “course correction due to oversaturation of product in 2021.” For women, skinny fits were down 29% YoY, but jeans arrivals in general increased by 2%, thanks to wide-leg and flared silhouettes, up 53% and 85% respectively.

In 2022, its research confirms that skinny jeans experienced the biggest dip in arrivals compared to other fits, down 52% for men and 29% for women. Their appeal remains nonetheless strong, but more as a core product than a trend-driven one, the company says.

In the first six months of this year, the long dominant skinny styles have been upended by slim fits for men, while women’s buying patterns have placed straight-leg jeans on the top of the podium.
