These awards, which have been declared as making an “exceptional contribution to the cultural heritage of Humanity” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, take place every year to recognise notable achievements in the sciences, humanities, and public affairs.
The jury said it wanted to recognise Ellen MacArthur’s efforts to encourage, through the foundation she set up in 2010, better use of the world’s resources and to speed up the transition to a circular economy.
“Ellen MacArthur works with her foundation to change the current paradigm of production and consumption based on a use of resources that is based on reducing, reusing and recycling materials in a sustainable way,” the judging panel said. “The jury values her work to drive a culture change in production and consumption in the textile industry.”
