Bio-based elastane by Hyosung gets 'eco' recognition

Swiss testing, inspection and certification body SGS has granted "eco-product" status to creora bio-based elastane, produced by Seoul-based fibre manufacturer Hyosung.

In certifying the fibre, SGS has not only verified its plant-based origin, but also its eco-friendly production environment. “It was very important for us to certify and document creora bio-based elastane so that our brand partners are able to pass along this verification and sustain consumer loyalty,” commented Hyosung’s global marketing director for textiles, Mike Simko.

Creora bio-based elastane replaces 30% of petroleum-based resources with raw material derived from sustainably grown industrial field or dent corn. Third-party lifecycle analysis (LCA) of the bio-based fibre has found it to have a carbon footprint that is 23% lower than conventional elastane, Hyosung said.

Suitable for all textile applications across ready-to-wear, loungewear and sportswear, the fibre supplies the same ultra-stretch quality and recovery as creora Powerfit elastane, its manufacturer added.

Mr Simko also teased upcoming plans to debut creora bio-based elastane made from 100% bio-derived content.
