Environmental improvements pay off at Indonesian mill
Denim producer Badjatex has published the results of a series of environmental measures it has put in place at its mill in Bandung, Indonesia.
The company, which has been operating for nearly 50 years, currently has the capacity to produce around 2.25 million metres of denim fabric every month.
Changes it has made at the mill include using ozone gas in some of its processes to achieve savings in water and chemicals, implementing its own wastewater treatment and a water recycling programme, bringing renewable fibres, including Lenzing’s Tencel, Refibra and Ecovera, into its material mix, and establishing what it calls a “garbage bank” in an effort to add value to waste material.
Results so far include reusing 50% of water at the Bandung mill and reducing energy use by up to 30%.
