Vicunha invests in cleaner collective water
Brazilian denim mill Vicunha has participated in the creation of a brand-new wastewater treatment plant in Maracanaú, close to Fortaleza in the Northeast of Brazil where three of the company’s factories are located. A $12 million investment, shared by Vicunha and Cagece, the State Water and Sewage Company of Ceará, it is divided into two facilities, one dedicated to industrial effluent, the other to treat wastewater from local households.

Vicunha says that the new water treatment infrastructure will make it possible to reduce the local industry’s use of fresh water by up to 90%.

The mill seeks to improve water efficiency at all levels, by reducing water consumption in its manufacturing operations and no longer using surface water sources in the state of Ceará. Its efforts have resulted in annual savings of over 160 million litres of water in the past two years, the company says.
