Indigo Art Museum display flies into Amsterdam

An artwork depicting flying birds, made from wire, textiles and resin and coloured with natural indigo, was flown from the new Indigo Art Museum in Ahmedabad, India, to denim show Kingpins Amsterdam to highlight the work the Arvind-backed museum is carrying out to preserve indigo’s legacy.
The museum is dedicated to exploring the rich history, artistic expression and diverse applications of indigo, in an area famous for its natural indigo cultivations – the area was trading the dye with the Netherlands as far back as 1600, according to Kavin Mehta, Indigo Art Museum’s creative director.
Artworks from a range of artists make up the permanent collection, and the venture will also support collaborations, workshops and educational programmes, connecting local communities, manufacturers and natural indigo farmers.
The Indigo Art Museum initiative is supported by the Arvind Indigo Foundation, a not-for-profit institution established in 2021 to promote and preserve the history, culture and art of indigo and other natural dyes and promote innovation and experimentation through their use in contemporary art and design.
