Arvind and Gap have high hopes for water innovation hub
India-based textiles and clothing manufacturer Arvind and fashion brand Gap have opened a Global Water Innovation Centre for Action (GWICA) at Arvind's Santej unit in western India, which they hope will become an innovation hub for apparel companies, manufacturing suppliers and vendors, sustainability experts, academics and other environmental stakeholders.

The centre develop new resources and collaborate with external water and apparel experts to curate materials. It will offer training programmes, catering to operator-level staff in textile factories.

It houses an R&D facility, which will focus on six innovative water solutions and create platforms for start-ups to showcase water-saving advancements.

Punit Lalbhai, an executive director at Arvind, said: “This collaboration reflects our dedication to holistic sustainability, fostering innovation and driving positive change at every level of our operations.”

Gap CEO Richard Dickson added: “Our founders understood the transformative power of a purpose-driven brand, and 55 years later we are a global company with the scale to make a real difference in the world. By combining our expertise and resources, Arvind and Gap are building a more water-resilient future for the apparel industry and the communities where we operate.”

The water stewardship initiative started with the unveiling of a sewage water treatment plant at Arvind’s Naroda denim processing unit in Ahmedabad in 2019, which has helped eliminate the reliance on fresh water in processing by using Membrane Bio Reactor (MBR) technology.
