Levi’s debuts new Plant-Based 501 jeans

As part of a wider product roll-out in celebration of the 150-year anniversary of the Levi’s 501 jean, the company has released the Plant-Based 501, a hemp-cotton blend of denim jeans designed with at least 97% plant-based material content.
The cottons used to weave the denims are all certified organic, finished with natural indigo from Stony Creek Colors, a back patch made from Natural Fiber Welding’s plant-based, plastic-free Mirum material, inks derived from 100% bio-based BioBlack TX black pigment. Levi’s archival X80 shade was used for colouration.
Their only non-plant-based content includes the sewing threads, care label and metal trims.
Levi’s said it calculated the percentage given for each pair’s plant-based content by calculating the weight of its total components versus overall garment weight.
“As a company that has been making 501s for 150 years now, we have an opportunity – and a responsibility – to continually interrogate the process by which these jeans are made,” commented group vice-president of design innovation, Paul Dillinger. “These jeans build on past efforts to create more circular jeans and in turn give us a foundation for future innovation.”
Levi’s is similarly set to drop hemp-cotton-blended Selvedge 501s via its WellThread line.
