Biotech indigo breakthrough
In a partnership with Citizens of Humanity and Turkish denim mill Orta, Pili has announced the launch of its biobased indigo on a commercial scale. The innovative dye is featured in the Spring 2025 ranges of Citizens of Humanity and Agolde. They are available exclusively on Net-a-porter, starting today, before the brands’ e-commerce sites, along with other retailers, also begin to sell the products.

The French biotech company has been working on developing an indigo pigment since 2015. Its process is said to combine fermentation with organic chemistry. Pili began producing the biotech indigo in the tonnes last year, and has invested over €35 million since its launch to industrialise its patented processes.

Pili’s indigo is further said to have the same performance as petrochemical indigo and is presented as a drop-in solution for mills.
